Documents Alabama can apostille

  • Birth certificates
  • Marriage certificates
  • Statements of marital status
  • Articles of incorporation
  • Corporate bylaws
  • Certificates of merger
  • Powers of attorney
  • Diplomas
  • School transcripts
  • Deeds
  • ABI background checks

The issuing state is what matters, not where you live now. A document issued or notarized in another state goes to that state's office, and documents from federal agencies go to the U.S. Department of State through our federal apostille service.

Alabama requirements to check before you book

  • The document must bear an original signature and an embossed or ink-stamped seal of a currently commissioned Alabama public official (for an Apostille: a notary public, probate judge, or the current State Registrar).Source
  • Birth and death certificates needing an Apostille must bear the signature of the current Alabama State Registrar.Source
  • School documents must be notarized by an Alabama notary public; a school official's signature and registrar seal alone are not accepted.Source
  • For a Certification (non-Hague country), each notarized document must first get a county authentication of the notary's commission from the probate judge in the county where the notary is commissioned.Source
  • Documents in a foreign language must be accompanied by a notarized English translation.Source
  • Submit the Authentication Submittal Form naming the destination country and choosing Apostille or Certification; one document per certificate requested.Source

Good to know

  • Federal documents are not authenticated at the state level; they go to the U.S. Department of State.
  • Non-Hague Certifications on notarized documents need an extra county authentication step from the probate judge; Apostilles do not.
  • Authentication services are for international use only.

About our Alabama apostille service

Alabama apostille and authentication certifies Alabama-issued documents for use in another country. We handle birth certificates, marriage and divorce records, probate court orders, and notarized business documents needed for foreign company registration. Trilogy Notary Services LLC arranges notarization by mobile notary or remote online notarization, files with the Alabama Secretary of State, and ships the finished apostille anywhere in the country.

How it works

  1. Book onlineChoose the option that matches your document and destination, then tell us the document type, the country where it will be used, and your deadline.
  2. We review your document firstBefore anything is filed, we check it against the Alabama requirements on this page. If a step is missing, such as a notarization or a certified copy, we tell you what's needed before we file.
  3. Send your original or meet a notaryWe send mailing instructions after you book. If your document still needs to be signed and notarized, one of our mobile notaries can meet you, or you can use remote online notarization where it's accepted.
  4. We file and track itWe submit your request to the Alabama Office of the Secretary of State with the government fee and follow it until the office releases it.
  5. We ship it backYour documents come back by tracked shipping. If your destination also needs embassy legalization or a certified translation, we can handle that next.

Pricing

$350 per document.

Prices include the Alabama state fee, courier filing, return shipping, and handling. Sales tax is added at checkout where it applies, and any deposit is shown before you pay. If you have more than one document, tell us the count when you book and we'll confirm your total.

Government processing times are set by the issuing office and change during the year. We don't promise a delivery date that depends on a government office, and we'll tell you the current timing when we review your order.

Common questions

How much does an Alabama apostille cost through Trilogy?

Our Alabama apostille service starts at $350 per document. That price includes the Alabama government fee of $5 per document, plus courier filing, return shipping, and handling. Sales tax, if it applies, and any deposit are shown at checkout before you pay.

Who issues apostilles in Alabama?

The Alabama Office of the Secretary of State, Authentication Division. Trilogy Notary Services is a private document services company: we prepare and submit your request and track it, but the apostille itself is issued by the state office.

What does Alabama require before it will apostille a document?

The document must bear an original signature and an embossed or ink-stamped seal of a currently commissioned Alabama public official (for an Apostille: a notary public, probate judge, or the current State Registrar). Birth and death certificates needing an Apostille must bear the signature of the current Alabama State Registrar. We check for these before anything is filed.

Can Alabama apostille an FBI background check or another federal document?

No. Documents issued and signed by a federal agency, such as an FBI background check, are authenticated by the U.S. Department of State, not by the Alabama Office of the Secretary of State. We handle those through our federal apostille service.

What if my destination country is not in the Hague Apostille Convention?

For non-Hague countries, Alabama issues this instead of a standard apostille: Certification. Many non-Hague countries then require embassy or consulate legalization, which we handle through our embassy legalization service. Tell us the destination country when you book.

How long does an Alabama apostille take?

As published by the state when we checked on October 29, 2026: Submittal form: 'Allow five business days for mail time.' No in-office processing time stated. Add time for document preparation and shipping both ways. Government processing times change and are outside our control, so we don't promise a delivery date.
