Documents New Jersey can apostille

  • Documents notarized by a New Jersey notary public
  • Documents signed by selected NJ public officials such as Superior Court judges and County Clerks
  • New Jersey vital records signed by the State Registrar of Vital Statistics

The issuing state is what matters, not where you live now. A document issued or notarized in another state goes to that state's office, and documents from federal agencies go to the U.S. Department of State through our federal apostille service.

New Jersey requirements to check before you book

  • Every request starts with an online order through the Apostille/Certification Service; the printed confirmation page must be mailed or dropped off with the original documents.Source
  • Notarized documents must bear the original inked signatures of the NJ notary public and of the person who presented the document for notarization.Source
  • Vital records from January 1, 1923 forward must be obtained from the NJ Department of Health; earlier records come from the New Jersey State Archives.Source
  • A separate online request must be made for each country where the document will be presented.Source

Good to know

  • The Division cannot issue apostilles or certifications for vital records from other states; those must be authenticated in the state of origin.
  • The apostille or certification is stapled to the signature page; do not remove it once attached.
  • For non-English documents a notarized English translation is recommended; attached to a vital record, it means two apostilles and two fees.

About our New Jersey apostille service

New Jersey apostille and authentication for New Jersey-issued documents. Choose an Apostille for Hague Convention countries or a Certificate (authentication) for non-Hague countries, for standard documents or adoption files. Standard covers birth, marriage, and death certificates, divorce judgments, diplomas and transcripts, criminal history checks, and notarized corporate documents. Adoption covers adoption decrees, amended birth certificates, home studies, agency and social worker letters, and post-placement reports. Trilogy Notary Services LLC reviews the file, arranges notarization where needed, and manages the New Jersey Division of Revenue submission for clients nationwide by mail.

How it works

  1. Book onlineChoose the option that matches your document and destination, then tell us the document type, the country where it will be used, and your deadline.
  2. We review your document firstBefore anything is filed, we check it against the New Jersey requirements on this page. If a step is missing, such as a notarization or a certified copy, we tell you what's needed before we file.
  3. Send your original or meet a notaryWe send mailing instructions after you book. If your document still needs to be signed and notarized, one of our mobile notaries can meet you, or you can use remote online notarization where it's accepted.
  4. We file and track itWe submit your request to the New Jersey Department of the Treasury with the government fee and follow it until the office releases it.
  5. We ship it backYour documents come back by tracked shipping. If your destination also needs embassy legalization or a certified translation, we can handle that next.

Common questions

How much does a New Jersey apostille cost through Trilogy?

Our New Jersey apostille service starts at $350 per document. That price includes the New Jersey government fee of $25 per document, plus courier filing, return shipping, and handling. Sales tax, if it applies, and any deposit are shown at checkout before you pay.

Who issues apostilles in New Jersey?

The New Jersey Department of the Treasury, Division of Revenue and Enterprise Services. Trilogy Notary Services is a private document services company: we prepare and submit your request and track it, but the apostille itself is issued by the state office.

What does New Jersey require before it will apostille a document?

Every request starts with an online order through the Apostille/Certification Service; the printed confirmation page must be mailed or dropped off with the original documents. Notarized documents must bear the original inked signatures of the NJ notary public and of the person who presented the document for notarization. We check for these before anything is filed.

Can New Jersey apostille an FBI background check or another federal document?

No. Documents issued and signed by a federal agency, such as an FBI background check, are authenticated by the U.S. Department of State, not by the New Jersey Department of the Treasury. We handle those through our federal apostille service.

What if my destination country is not in the Hague Apostille Convention?

For non-Hague countries, New Jersey issues this instead of a standard apostille: Certification (of the public official). Many non-Hague countries then require embassy or consulate legalization, which we handle through our embassy legalization service. Tell us the destination country when you book.

How long does a New Jersey apostille take?

As published by the state when we checked on October 29, 2026: Standard: 12-20 business days from receipt and entry into the system. Expedited: 8.5 business hours from receipt and entry. Add time for document preparation and shipping both ways. Government processing times change and are outside our control, so we don't promise a delivery date.
